Johnson's Tick Removal Tool
Both Jenny and I keep a Tick Removal Tool in our cars and at home - just in case.
Our dogs are short coated so we're lucky that we can see everything and we're able to act quickly, especially when we've been walking in areas where there are lots of deer. The longer a tick stays on your dog, the higher the chance of a potential infection but it's equally important that a tick is removed correctly so as not to leave any the tick's mouth parts embedded in the dog's skin.
Johnson's Tick Removal Tool has double ended with a different size removal tool at each end to deal with ticks of varying sizes.
ohnson's Tick Removal Tool is easy to use, allowing you to basically "twist" off a tick safely from your dog. There is a great explanation on the Lyme Disease UK website: How to Remove a Tick from your Dog.
There are other options for removing ticks, for example with sharp, pointed tweezers (see the article on the Lyme Disease UK site) but if you don't have those at home then a Tick Removal Tool is handy to have around.
