The Best Dog Blankets For Winter Are Insulating and Moisture-Wicking & Machine Washable Too

In winter weather, always choose dog blankets that are designed to trap heat and are made from quick-drying, moisture-wicking textiles to wick moisture away from your dog's wet paws and coat. Avoid moisture-retaining fabrics in winter, such as cotton throws, that absorb and retain moisture and can lead to your dog sleeping in a damp, cold dog bed.

Warmth is an obvious requirement for a winter dog blanket but it's also essential that the fabric is moisture-wicking. Dogs are soggy in winter - damp paws & damp dog coats, plus they often tuck their noses under blankets while they sleep. This makes for a very humid micro-environment in a dog bed, full of moisture, so moisutre-wicking dog blankets are essential to manage moisture and prevent cold, damp dog beds.

For dogs that are natural burrowers who are adept at getting under blankets themselves, add a blanket to the bed that your dog can lie on top of (a bit like a warm bed sheet) and another blanket on top that is left loose and larger than your dog when laid out flat. The larger size for the top blanket makes it easier for your dog to get right under the blanket and tuck themselves in.

The Best Winter Dog Blanket Set-up for Dogs That Do Not Burrow 

If your dog is not a natural burrower and does not try to get under blankets themselves, or can only get under a blanket with help from a human, we recommend adding two or three relatively small blankets (relative to their size and the size of the bed) into your dog's bed. 

Smaller size blankets are easier for dogs to dig and "arrange" as they wish.  Lying on an insulating blanket with more blanket for them to nestle their backs into still traps warm air around their bodies to keep them cosier and  more comfortable in cold weather.
