Keeping your dog comfortable in warm weather is about more than walking earlier or later in the day, it's also essential that they can rest comfortably through the heat.

Space to stretch out fully

In hot weather, always ensure your dog has enough space to stretch out fully in their bed - stretching out and lying on their side is one way that dogs cool down when feeling hot.

Rectangular mattresses lend themselves better to stretching out, but round beds are fine as long as your dog can stretch out with spine, neck and legs fully extended.

Choose pale, place in shade

Many dog owners choose dark colours for dog bedding as they're more forgiving on visible dirt, but dark colours absorb, retain and radiate much more heat from sunlight than pale colours.

In hot weather, choose pale colours for your dog's bedding and place their bed in a shady spot out of direct sunlight to help create a cooler sleep sancturary for your dog.

Layers for cool nights

Whilst it may be hot during the day, tempratures can drop significantly overnight. Draping a blanket in their bed at night time is the easiest way to ensure a dog is cosy when the air is cooler.

Simply roll up the blanket and put it to one side of the bed during the day if it's hot.

Don't feed the dust mites

Summer is peak breeding season for dust mites so whilst your dog's bed may look relatively clean, it's likely to be a hive of activity in the covers and inside the mattress.

Protect internal mattress pads from animal dander (dust mites feed on it) and other dirt with a waterproof bed liners, and wash your dog's bedding regularly.
